Pearls of Wisdom

That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole of the Torah; the rest is commentary.

    “Love thy neighbour as thyself”

Which reminds me, my old parish priest gave a sermon many years ago on the Christian duty to love ourselves enshrined in that verse. I seem to remember it involved ice-cream and bubble baths, and probably other things. Even then, as a young lad, I thought it the theology of it was a bit dodgy. It later turned out the said parish priest not only loved himself, but he’d also been obeying the commandment by loving the parish secretary and my primary school teacher. He made the front page of the NOTW. I felt rather proud of him. He, naturally, despised such worldy success.

(Maybe I should have put this on the previous post.)

I’ve also liked that quote for a long time.
Striking that it’s the reverse of the other common quote : Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
The Jewish version is naturally thought by Jewish scholars to be better than the other, but the difference escapes me. Two sides of the same coin, IMHO.
