B.A. Baracas goes to war…

Muammar Ghadaffi: Have we crushed the rebels yet Colonel?
Colonel al Deqhar: We have them in a secure facility awaiting interrogation, sir!
Muammar Ghadaffi: Excellent! Tell me you haven’t locked them in the vehicle service area with all the welding equipment again Colonel?
Colonel al Deqhar: Err…

Cue the tune…

NATO may not officially have boots on the ground in Libya but there is someone there who has a heck of a lot of gold jewellery. Has anyone seen the A-Team since that dreadful movie? Apart from B.A. in the Snickers adverts but those were an obvious subterfuge.

Yeah, that is the turret of a BMP-1 Soviet infantry fighting vehicle mounted on the back of a “technical” (probably a Toyota Hi-Lux) and that’s a 73mm cannon. As Defense Tech mentions the gunner’s seat is a standard office typing chair much the same as the IKEA one I am now sitting on. DT also suggests (needlessly – by which I mean obviously) that the accuracy has got to be very dubious at best but for anyone who watched the A-Team (and I pity the fool who didn’t) that is not really the point is it?

  1. RobC says:

The most common “technical” is a Toyota Land Cruiser UTE and this “tank” is one.
I wonder how many rounds it will fire before the chassis or welding of the turret structure fails… :-)

  2. Assuming you could remotely aim the thing, could a 73mm round do any damage to a T-72 at effective ranges? Wiki tells me these are 500 metres or less. Would you get within 500 metres of a Libyan tank column in this thing? Me neither

  3. NickM says:

Depends what you’re firing. That’s a smoothbore so compatible with various ATGWs.

  4. RAB says:

Well I hope they are aiming the gun better than the dude pointing the camera. That was a whole lotta floor in that clip!

  5. NickM says:

I am a rather good photographer. Video – ah hell, that’s hard! In the context I reckon an amateur with a camcorder did rather well.

  6. RAB says:

Yeah I am much better at stills than video. I tend to pan too fast and forget to use the zoom.

The wife is brill at stills but video is a no no. See she likes to turn the camera sideways for those long upright shots, but she does the same when using the video setting on our Lumix, and of course when you download it the bloody video comes out sideways. There must be a way to turn them up the right way, but I’m buggered if I know how to do it. If anyone of our good readers does, do tell.

  7. NickM says:

When I got my Sony Alpha-55 (serious kit) the salesman said that due to it’s very fast auto-focus – It’s an SLT, not SLR – the video is great. Riiight… Like I care. Do I look like Cecil B? But the auto-focus is fast and continual and at 10fps @16Mpixels… It’s a piece of work. And at full speed it sounds like a bloody Gatling gun. Video is difficult.

Well, most video editing s/w enables you to flip and rotate. Check the settings on the camera. Most have some sort of orientation sensor built in.
