Christopher Hitchens – Rest in Peace.

I just heard Ian McEwan talking about his pal Christopher Hitchens. Well, I didn’t have a term for Hitchens until I read Neil Gaiman’s “American Gods” who had Shadow describe Odin as an “irascible old fucker”. I think that just about describes Hitch to a “T”. The World is poorer for his loss even (because) he was an irascible old fucker.

  1. RAB says:

He was a man who could look himself in the face, and tell himself…

    You could be wrong…

Not many reach that level of spirituality or self revelation.

    Yes he will be missed.

  2. Thornavis says:

Definitely one of the good guys, his ability to take down stupid arguments in a few well chosen and unanswerable sentences was awe inspiring, not to mention his ability to take down incredible amounts of alcohol and still stay coherent. I wonder who hated and feared him most, religious loonies, weaseling lefties or purse lipped puritans ?

  3. Kevin B says:

The song at the beginning of this clip, (after the stupid ad), is a nice self deprecating piece.

Then there’s lots of good stuff and some stuff that winds one up. ‘Course we’ll all have different likes and dislikes but that’s Hitch.

  4. Lynne says:

He was an irrascible old fucker who wasn’t afraid to call a spade a spade. He was often a champion of common sense and wasn’t afraid to take on political and institutional stupidity in the face of adversity. There ought to be more journalists like him. Unfortunately they seem to be an endangered species.

  5. endivior says:

His brother, in spite of being wrong about everything, is also worth a read.

  6. NickM says:

The problem with “COMMON SENSE” is that it isn’t anywhere near as common as it’s name suggests. Hitch had it.

The reason I posted this was that in the ICU he still wrote 3,000 words on GK Chesterton.

  7. john in cheshire says:

Taking a cue from the old adages : if you can’t say something nice, then say nothing and don’t speak ill of the dead, I shall say nothing about Mr C Hitchens, Marxist and hater of Christians.

  8. Thornavis says:

jic. “Hater of Christians”, I don’t believe so, there’s a difference between vehement opposition to someone’s beliefs and hatred of the person, loving the sinner and all that. Yes he was a Trot at least in earlier times but he hardly endeared himself to the left in later years and if a Marxist is prepared to speak the truth about the enemies of freedom he’s OK with me.

  9. NickM says:

Well said Thornavis. I’m not saying Christopher Hitchins was my best pal but he was always interesting and if Christians of various stripes can’t be on with him then fine. We live in a complex world and I have friends who believe things I couldn’t stomach but I do not wish them ill. As far as I know Hitch never killed anyone or sort it.

  10. Sam Duncan says:

Peter, in yesterday’s Mail: In Memoriam, my courageous brother Christopher, 1949-2011. Well worth reading.

I imagine not a few Lefties will be lamenting the unfairness in Christopher going first. I suspect his brother would agree.
