The alternative to the enlightenment

More jolly japes from the wonderful wacky world that Mo built:

A Saudi woman said to be haunted by jinn (spirits) beat and tortured herself with fire until she fell unconscious and died later at hospital.

The 40-year-old woman was admitted with severe burns and injuries to King Fahd hospital in the western town of Madina and doctors said they tried in vain to save her life.

“We have determined that the woman beat herself up and tortured herself with fire because she is gripped by jinn,” police spokesman Colonel Abdullah Al Sarani told the Saudi Arabic language daily Okaz.

“Investigation showed the other members of her family are also controlled by jinn…we closed the case as no criminal act is involved.”

    Mother’s Ruin you know.

Yeah, I was wondering if there was a tonic to help with the djinn.

    Simple explanation.
    Their nuts.

Hmm…Woman possessed by jinn (dies without regaining consciousness). Possible mental illness? Alternate scenario, husband/father tortures, burns, then kills woman, claims jinn possession, investigation clears family, no messy honour killing inquiries. Occam’s razor anyone?

    APL,

    Gee, ya think?

Well considering this recently happened in Shoddy Absudia…

Colour me unsurprised. We executed witches here as well you know. The Pendle trials are quite celebrated round here (there is a bus route named for them) but that was even controversial at the time and happened in the year of Our Lord 1612 or 399 years back. So we have nigh on at least a four hundred year start on these oafs. I’ll be living on Mars by the time they invent the pocket calculator. I think it is telling that Turkey is a nice gaff because Ataturk dragged the fuckers kicking and screaming out of the dark ages. And God alone knows where the Indians and Chinese shall be but I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a deep space take-away. Just not falafel because they will be there first. Johnnie Arab will still be executing “sorcerers” and blaming the Zionists for his dreadful lot when the first Hindu lands on Titan. Oh well, fuck ‘em I say. Hell that Hindu might have made it because Intel was inside and that really is Israeli! Cue utter rage. The entire mid-East is made of sand. One country has managed to persuade us to buy things made of it. It is not a country where “sorcery” is a crime. It is a country where doing really clever things with no oil is the order of the day. Intel works there and not in Jordan or Egypt or Arabia. Dare I say because they are four not hundred years out of kilter?

Hell, I recently ponied up dough to buy for a not small sum something designed by those terrible yids. Tiny it is and cost nearly a hundred quids. It does work mind. We understand magic here – we invented it – so I am happy with Israeli magic. Because they don’t kill their wizards.

When I used to be part of the UAE bloggers group, I remember reading a post in which one bloke said “I believe in jinns because they are mentioned in the Koran.” That was it. Wholesale acceptance, no critical enquiry whatsoever.

They’re doing their level best to drag themselves back into it of late, though. They’ve already started on the Israel-bashing.

Gosh! another APL. Had I managed to comment first, the alternate scenario is my favorite explanation.

    Maybe it’s the Djinn?

  10. Paul Marks says:

Sadly true Tim – Islam is on the rise in Turkey.

However, they are not yet at the Djinn stage.

The family may be shamming (i.e. have tortured the women to death), but they are claiming to be possessed by Djimm (they would not need to claim this if it was a “normal” “honour killing”).

The sick thing is, of course, that the authorities believe them.

And Nick is correct – that will not work for a long term progress.

Certainly they (Sunni or Shia factions) may atomically bomb a few cities, or wipe Israel (or even Western Europe) off the map by weight of numbers.

But they will not be building any successful deep space craft – no Mosques on Mars.

Blaming engine problems on Djinn will not work.

If the judge at the Salem witch trials understood that (too late) and he denounced what he had been involved with – and ended up writing the first anti slavery classic in American literature (“Selling Joseph”).

The downplaying of human reason by the Saudi tradition means that such a development is not to be expected there.

However, the West is also unlikely to send manned space ships of Mars (and so on).

We are bankrupt credit bubble welfare states – and such societies do not send manned space ships to Mars.
