Utter Scum

I like the North West England. I like Manchester. My adoptive metro area has much to be proud of. But in a city of over three and a half million souls (roughly the size of the Atlanta metro area for our American readers) but some inevitably have to be lower than the Marianas absymal

A vicar has spoken of his sadness after metal thieves stole two crosses from a church to sell on as scrap. The crooks snatched the crucifixes along with a Christening font, engraved jug, bowls, book stands and even the collection plate during the raid at St Mark’s in Edgeley, Stockport. The Rev David Brewster arrived at the Berlin Road church to find a window smashed and the brass items missing.

They stole a brass collection plate. For fuck’s sake! I mean it’s hardly Professor Moriaty territory is it?

My first thoughts are they are ‘travellers’. I wonder if I’d make a good policeman, profiling the perps. and such. My second thought is muslims.

Sounds like a plan B manoeuvre to me. They forgot to bring a ladder so they could nick the lead off the roof and didn’t want to go away empty handed.

Whatever the intension they are still lower than the arsehole of a Marianas abyssal worm. Just a step behind the lice who steal bronze war memorials for scrap.

    jic,
I think you misunderstand me. My entire point here is that travelers tend to be religious almost to a fault and that doesn’t look like a jihadi operation. My point, as Lynne says, is this is just utter scumbaggery. There is no point to it other than to make the cost of very cheap and nasty drugs.

A few weeks ago I had the metal drain cover on my driveway nicked. Cheeky scrappers.

It’s not just the UK. I was bimbling along minding my own business reading the back of the box containing the gizmo I’d just bought and went down hard where someone had nicked an inspection cover. I nearly broke both wrists and two months later I’m still significantly restricted in my movement in my upper back area. If it were Blighty, I most certainly would have sued (I abhor ambulance chasing, but this incident nearly put me in an ambulance for real.) As it is, the cover is next to an undeveloped lot and even if it weren’t, it wouldn’t be worth it.

Stealing manhole covers etc. is potentially fatal. Stealing infrastructure items like cabling could also cost lives and is staggeringly expensive. Scrap value is a fraction of the extrinsic value stolen items so it is very destructive of wealth. I’s like to see truly savage penalties for metal theft. Like tens of years. And forfeiture of businesses for scrap merchants.
