Fail Online

The Daily Mail is running a story about an ex-police officer who has been arrested and charged with the kidnap and murder of a young girl.

Ex-police officer accused of kidnapping and killing ‘Pretty Maria’, seven, 50 years ago and discarding her body like ‘a piece of garbage’

The Daily Mail Reporter goes on to say:

Jack McCullough, 72 and a former Washington state police officer, has pleaded not guilty to the 1957 kidnapping and slaying of Maria Ridulph, of Sycamore. It’s one of the oldest cold-case murders brought to trial in the United States.

Fifty years ago, eh?  Well I was born in 1957 and if this innumerate and nameless Daily Mail Reporter wants to shave five years off my age who am I to argue?

  1. Paul Marks says:

Such crime must be punished – 50 years old, or 55 years old.

  2. john b says:

The reporting does actually make a difference to the nature of the case though – while it’s appalling and needs to be punished either way, there is a big difference between said crime committed by a 17-year-old boy versus by a 22-year-old police officer.

  3. Lynne says:

My point in a nutshell, john b. It’s not the harrowing story, it’s the sloppy way the Wail has reported it.

Let’s hope the girl’s family finally get closure. They’ve waited long enough.

  4. Plamus says:

Could one generously interpret the first quote as “he was accused 50 years ago”? Crime in 1957, accused in 1962? It’s a stretch on syntax, but…

  5. Lynne says:

Or it could be that reporter is incapable of performing a simple subtraction that wouldn’t have a six year old breaking into a sweat. :0)

And that goes double for whoever proof-read the article.
