Sunday Night Thomas

Collected by Andrew Bolt:

Muslim leaders have vowed to discuss the offensive video from their U.N. platforms (at the UN General Assembly this week), sowing concern among free-speech activists of a fresh push toward an international law that would criminalize blasphemy...

Pakistan Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has reiterated his demand from the United Nations and other international organisations to come up with an effective legislation against all kinds of anti-Islam acts…

We would go to the UN and OIC and get a law passed to stop anti-Islam activities, including blasphemy, forever,” the News Agencies quoted Ashraf, as saying…

“…we will not just grin and bear it when Islam’s prophet is insulted,” Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan told party members at the weekend.

“The protests in the Muslim world must be measured, and the West should show a determined stance against Islamophobia.”

Egypt’s new Islamist president, Mohamed Morsi said the United States needed to fundamentally change its approach to the Arab world, showing greater respect for its values

Egypt’s president and other Muslim leaders should demand the U.N. criminalize contempt of religion after the release of an anti-Islamic film and cartoons which demonstrate growing racism, said the leader of the biggest ultra-orthodox Islamist party.

And finally:

President Obama will address “the recent unrest in the Muslim world” in his speech Tuesday to the United Nations General Assembly, the White House is saying…

“As he has in recent days, the President will make it clear that we reject the views in this video, while also underscoring that violence is never acceptable,” said National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor in a memo on Obama’s upcoming U.N. speech.

“while also underscoring that violence is never acceptable”

Says the man with a kill list who has made more drone strikes than even Bush 2. So never acceptable unless he wants to do it. In which case it is acceptable.

So remind me what ‘never’ means again. Oh yes, they hate us because we are free.

(Obviously, this post in no way, shape or form sides with the flag-burning loons).

The worst thing the West could do, both for Muslims and the West, would be to capitulate to Muslim demands. The opposite is needed – honest, unflinching and unceasing criticism of Islam. This from a post I wrote a few days ago [links omitted]:

The questioning of religious dogma and customs were critical parts of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, and such questioning was the entire basis for the Reformation. Those titanic events of Western History took all aspects of our civilization, including our religious practices, out of the Dark Ages and into modernity.

Without these titanic historical periods, we would still be living under the yoke of a Dark Ages interpretation of religion. Witches would be executed, as would blasphemers and heretics. Any criticism of religious dogma would be met with violence. Any who left our religion would be subject to murder. Corruption among the clerics would be beyond reproach. Religion, instead of being a faith, would be a central tool of political power and state control. Our civilization would be dysfunctional, not dynamic. Our government would subject people of other religions to severe state discrimination. Modern science, sparked by the Enlightenment and the basis for all of the technological advances of Western civilization, would have been severely circumscribed. Wouldn’t that be horrendous?

Well, take a look at Islam today as practiced in the Middle East, and that is what you will find – all those things and more in every country with a Muslim government. And as to science, do note that Saudi Arabia only put the flat earth theory behind them with the recent turn of the millenium. A fatwa issued by the Grand Mufti in 1993 instructed “the earth is flat. Whoever claims it is round is an atheist deserving of punishment.”

The radical Muzzies have never gone through a period of Enlightenment, a Renaissance or a Reformation. And they never will if criticism of their religion, in any and every form, is silenced. That is the world to which [those calling for blasphemy laws in the West] would consign Muslims, and if not altered, it is a world that will inevitably lead to an existential clash with our own civilization. It is the precise opposite of what is needed, both for the Muslim world and our own.

  3. Henry Crun says:

I may be wrong, but you can only be accused of blasphemy if you are a believer of that faith. If you are an unbeliever, then the charge would be heresy.

  4. RAB says:

So are you still sure there’s been a seachange Cats?

These Islamist bastards are determined to shut down Free Speech under the “Or Else!” doctrine.

We all know that the Arab Spring that our idiot Pols were so enthusiastic about, has turned into the Islamist Winter. Within a few years the whole of the Middle East will be consolidated under Fundamentalism. Then real trouble will start.

Time we chucked the UN overboard. Then watch as it sinks under the weight of its own odium.

  6. Write here says:

I agree the UN is unworkable, and appears only to exist to give various thugs and fascists a a few days out in New York. A rambling speech, a bit of shopping, a nice hotel with running water… you can’t beat it can you?

No matter what they say about it or what laws they ‘pass,’ many would still regard it as piss-poor silliness.

  7. Laird says:

Not to disagree with any of the comments posted above, but Cats you do realize that “Rage, rage, against the dying of the light” has an entirely different meaning than its use in this context would suggest, right?

  8. CountingCats says:

    Laird,

I do, but the metaphor is apt.

  9. Robert Edwards says:

The essence of the problem (poignantly suggested in the OP) is that Islam is the ‘new member’ – God, Mark Three, if you like – and constant, amused (and less amused) tolerance is offered to them, simply because of their numbers. Bless them, they’re still learning how to behave. Lack of seniority and a hamstrung, confused (and personalised) theology seldom count in one’s favour in the logic stakes. It is easy to hijack. Very few people from either God marks 1 or 2, for example, believe in Djinns, or imps of Satan, or even Satan. Nor, indeed, in angels, or Gabriel.

I have no doubt that an ‘Islamic’ reformation is not an option, because as constituted, it operates on the basis of what spooks would call a ‘cellular’ system. I am reminded of nothing so much as the Church of Monday Night Football, which was a very successful exercise in the United States some years ago, loosely established using some of the nomenclature of established religion. It made a fortune.

Third-world reaction to other-world contentment is, I suppose, predictable enough. There is also the historical problem of lost seniority over time, due largely to sloppy thinking and bone-idleness. To be sure, the Sultan of Zanzibar was doing q. well until the Royal Navy shut him down, but he was something of a one-trick pony, which revolved around the ownership of other people.

But ‘Kaffirs’ do not qualify. It’s a club you join at your peril. I once had to engage with a white American, middle-class, middle American Moslem convert. Within minutes of the opning conversation, he had turned into a swivel-eyed prosyletiser, talking utter crap. He could not read the Q’ran in the original Arabic, for he neither spoke nor wrote any language aside from English and a smattering of Norwegian.

I told him to fuck off and read more books…

PS – my late Aunt Tilly, who knew Dylan Thomas well, was wrong in her assessment of him that he was a ‘pathetic little bugger…’

  10. Paul Marks says:

Christians have done terrible things – but Jesus did not, nor did he teach terrible things.

Muhammed did terrible things – and he taught them.

Islam, therefore, can not truly be reformed.

The leaders of the West are fools or knaves – or both.
