Quote of the Day

the self-critical impulse in Western culture has mutated into an auto-immune syndrome. The agents of our culture are opposed to it.

“White guilt”, multi-culturalism, oikophobia, and xenolatry are rampant – especially in the academy and high culture circles.

Rich Rostrom commenting on Samizdata

Love it. You don’t even have to look up the word in the dictionary, the meaning is obvious. Not that you will find it, neologism and all that.

Best word I have encountered since Roger Scruton expanded oikophobia.

  1. Julie near Chicago says:

Excellent word. That makes three since I started serious Internetting: Dextrosphere, oikophobia, and now xenolatry.

As long as there are Greek and Latin, there will always be Hope! :>)))

  2. CountingCats says:

    Dextrosphere? Good word.
    So let me coin sinestrosphere.

I doubt if I am the first, but what the hell.

  3. RAB says:

I have some Latin, but little Greek…

I thought Oikophobia was a fear of Plebs?

  4. Julie near Chicago says:

“Sinestrosphere.” Would not that be the foul pit wherein the stench of dead Cthulhu rises writhing yet again? I like it. I know of certain golem who, I’m pretty sure, were fashioned from the noxious, noisome vapors….

  5. RAB says:

    How about Chavophilla? 😉

I seem to have to enter my name and email address each time when I post a comment, not a big deal I grant you, but why isn’t it remembering them like it used to?

  6. John Galt says:

I’m not saying it’s just you RAB, but I’m not having that problem on Chrome on a Windows 8 laptop.

Actually, I probably am saying that.

“Rah! Rah! Rah! we’re going to smash the Oiks!”

  7. Kevin B says:

RAB, it remembers my name and e-mail, (firefox 22.0), so maybe you’ve got cookies disabled or deleted your cats cookie, (since that’s where it’s stored).

  8. RAB says:

Seems to be back to normal now. Ho hum, I’ll never understand these magic boxes :-)

  9. Rich Rostrom says:

I am profoundly flattered by your selection of my comment as a QotD.

    But… My name is RostrOm.

It is a very simple name, and when anyone misspells it, I complain vigorously.

It’s my sore toe: the one thing I always complain about, and you stepped on it.

But I am flattered, and I thank you for the compliment.

  10. CountingCats says:

    Consider mea suitably culpaed.
