Quote of the Week.

Never underestimate the willingness of powerful people to ignore the evidence they find inconvenient. Never underestimate their willingness to appease industrial lobbyists by repeating the nonsense they generate. Never underestimate their readiness to sacrifice the common interests of humankind for the sake of a belief they refuse to abandon.

George Monbiot.

He thinks he’s talking about Deniers, but it can equally be attributed to Watermelons and greedy greeny rentseekers like Gore et al, and er… George himself, can’t it?

Gosh. Never heard of this guy, Lynne.

  2. Julie near Chicago says:

I just love it when people describe themselves accurately.

Still, it also just a teensy bit frustrating. Perhaps a small fund: “Mirror for Monbiot.”

  3. Julie near Chicago says:

PS. Out of morbid curiosity: Do you folks say “Mahn-bee-oh” (equal emPHAH’sis on all sylLAHbles) or what?

  4. RAB says:

Er fuck knows Julie… He is the Prophet that we dare not speak his name. ;-)

  5. VftS says:

    Julie, it’s pronounced ‘Moonbat’.

  6. Julie near Chicago says:

VftS, Ah, I see. Well, that’s logical, sort of like “form following function.” Or something. Perhaps he invented it* as his public name, in view of RAB’s highly informative point. If so, you have have to give him credit for adopting an open and honest moniker. :)

  7. Julie near Chicago says:

Follow the star … and you’ll go nowhere. Oops, sorry. :(

  8. Julie near Chicago says:

Well! The guy at Journeyman TV, at least, says MUHNb’yoh. Quickly.

–Debating Ian Plimer in 2011. I think I’ll follow RAB’s advice and use “Moonbat.” (The only problem is, distinguishing which is which. There are so many of them….)

  9. single acts of tyranny says:

I wonder if this is some kind of unconscious psychological projection?

  10. Lynne says:

MTG, I’m not the original poster.

  11. Lynne says:

RAB, Moonbat must be having a crisis of faith after the Russians totally owned Greenpeace yesterday.

    :D

  12. RAB says:

Heh! That’s the way to do it. If these Greenpeace clowns wish to sail the seven seas flying the Jolly Radish and pissing off people going about their lawful business , then it’s about time they learnt they can’t do it with impunity. The Russians do not piss about with fire-hoses.

  13. Sam Duncan says:

Never underestimate the Left’s lack of self-awareness. Monbiot, with his national newspaper column and the ear of Parliamentarians, implies that he isn’t “powerful people”. He suggests that the United Nations and former US Vice-President Albert Gore aren’t “powerful people”. He appears to think that Greenpeace and FOE, with their multi-million dollar budgets and truckloads of taxpayers’ cash aren’t “powerful people”. He insinuates that those industrial lobbyists aren’t on his side, that there aren’t juicy subsidies to be had in wind power, that BP and Shell aren’t up to their ears in “renewables”, and that Enron wasn’t the biggest supporter of carbon trading.

He’s blissfully unaware of the fact that he’s talking about himself.

Julie, my understanding is that Perry de H. of Samizdata coined “moonbat” for the egregious George, but I may be wrong. I’d say MON-bee-oh or MON-bee-ott; I’m never quite sure either.

And if you do not support eugenics you must be an “evolution denier”. Alex Epstein in praise of fossil fuels:

JW, pretty good piece; thanks for the link. May Mr. Epstein continue to spread the word assiduously with his talks and videos.
