Barry O’Bama caught being economical with the actualité

Stop Watching Us protest

“[NSA Chief General] Alexander did not discuss with President Obama in 2010 an alleged foreign intelligence operation involving German Chancellor Merkel, nor has he ever discussed alleged operations involving Chancellor Merkel”

NSA spokeswoman Vanee Vines

Unfortunately, a rather more reputable source than the NSA spokeswoman has been talking to German newspaper Bild am Sontag (Link in original German), in short, for those whose German is a bit rostig, the newspaper quoted US intelligence sources as saying:

“America’s National Security Agency chief General Keith Alexander had briefed Obama on the operation against Merkel in 2010″ and also that “Obama did not halt the operation but rather let it continue”

All of this needs to be taken with a certain amount of hypocritical salt, after all Darling Angela made it pretty plain that she had no problem with the NSA spying on the plebs (even German ones), but the elite of the nomenklatura such as herself were a very different matter. Not quite sure whether I find (on this issue at least) Obama or Merkel to be more objectionable.

Even the usual celebrity “liberals” are getting on the anti-NSA bandwagon, which WILL get Barry worried.

If we could just get a European judge to issue an extradition warrant… :-)

Barack Obama has been President for almost five years.

He can not just keep on blaming Bush – this will not wash any more.

No junior member of staff would dare to carry on listening in to the German Chancellor’s communications – not without approval.

The Commander in Chief approves such high level operations.

And the Commander in Chief is Barack Obama.

Plausible deniability only works when you aren’t grassed up to the newspapers.

I doubt that anything will come of this other than stronger security at the NSA to prevent Snowden-like leaks.

Anyone who thinks the NSA will stop spying on foreign leaders just because they get all whiny about it is an idiot. Darling Angela knows this full well, the NSA will keep spying on her mobile, e-mail, office, etc. because it is in their interests to do so. The only practical measure that she and her successors can undertake is to introduce soundproofing, jamming and encryption to block such spying.

I doubt very much it is just the NSA, I suspect all of the major countries will want to do the same, its just whether they have the capabilities and the funding or not.

As for the folks at stopwatching.us – it is good that people are protesting as it keeps pressure on both the NSA and the government to behave, but the only way anything meaningful is going to happen is by making the NSA’s actions unlawful and shrinking the budget.

Given the opaque nature of NSA hearings and funding, I’m guessing this is unlikely.

Even if the Patriot Act was repealed, most of the things that people object to would still go on, either through other legislation or under executive powers of the government. It’s not like the Patriot Act introduced spying to the world, it’s been going on since Adam was a lad.

By the way, is it just me or does anyone else find it funny that a bunch of film and TV celebrities would be promoting an organisation called “Stop Watching Us”. :-)

Too late, JG. I already stopped watching them. ;0)

  4. John Galt says:

I wouldn’t worry about it Lynne, they were all a bunch of faux ‘liberals’ anyway.

These are the same idiots who earn millions and yet support marxist organisations like the Occupy movement.

Brain dead the lot of them.

I’m with Lynne on this — I had to Stop Watching partway through. My stomach was bothering me. JG, I consider your highly astute remarks blanket absolution. :>)

I like the way they make a big point of Nixon as the Symbol of Absolute Evil. I guess Hitler is resting today.

It’s curious that they never refer to the Sith nor “the President” *yecch* nor DOJ. No, it’s all NSA (and the Eeeevilll ISP’s, etc.), and wagging the flag [sic] of “the U.S.A.” … “What I was eyewitness to was the subversion of the Constitution.” Oh yeah? Well, you jerk, that was practically a platform plank in the Sith’s 2008 campaign (and prior statements of his, going back many years). So how come it didn’t bother you then? I DO take it you voted for the guy who was going to “fundamentally transform” America?

    . . .

Our comments here would fit right in with the comments left at YouTube (or, at least, the first few of them, which is all I read).

I was also curious about just whose work this video is. It is a coalition called “Stop Watching Us,” from “right across the political spectrum,” as they say at their sign-up site. Along with the usual groups they also list the Libertarian Party, the Competitive Enterprise Institute, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and FreedomWorks. With the possible exception of FreedomWorks, none of these strike me as uninfluenced by leftism or Progressivism, but that’s purely an impression and not based on anything solid.

The individuals mentioned include Glenn Greenwald (who is hardly a non-”liberal,” to say the least — no matter what anybody thinks of him at the moment) and Eli Pariser. I don’t recognize most of the names, and don’t see anyone featured whom I’d consider “right-wing.” Which proves nothing, of course.

    . . .

Well, at least nobody can accuse the video of pandering to the “right wing.”

The poster at the bottom is great, IF a trifle ugly. :>))!!

    Good posting, JG.

    Thanks Julie.

In fairness the video and the points about “stopwatching.us” were offered without comment for the UK audience here as it was much trailed on the US news, but I saw only a brief item in the UK, on Channel 4 News I think.

The fact that the celebrity “liberals” (they aren’t) can somehow manage the Orwellian double-think of accusing the NSA of spying on them without the alternative viewpoint that this is in anyway the responsibility or even culpability of “The Community Organiser” is beyond me.

Whoop-di-doo! The US elected a black man as US President – that is so 2008! The simple fact is that regardless of the colour of Barry O’Bama’s skin, he’s been a bloody useless POTUS and the only cause he has promoted is that of undermining the United States. The guys is just another closet Marxist. Thank god he can only serve two terms.

I put it down to too much cocaine in the dressing rooms of TV and movie sets.

For myself, I’d prefer to see grassroots movements rather than celebrity-led ones as they tend to be more reliable and longer lasting.

Your average celebrity has the attention span of a gnat and the commitment of an Italian gigolo.

A succinct summary of the avg. celeb., JG! LOL
