Kodak is binning Kodachrome after 74 years.
My life is recorded via my Pentax on Kodachrome. Well most of it anyway. More recently it has tended to end-up on SD but it’s a sad day anyway. Or perhaps not. Everything goes, everything changes. Perhaps it is a smiling with a sigh.
I have a Kodachrome story. In Memphis, TN, I knelt down and wept because my camera ripped up a film. It was the film I had used to photograph New York including from the top of the Empire State Building early in a December morning. The best photos I never got and I’ve photographed the caldera of Santorini at dawn. But my girlfriend had her compact so it wasn’t all lost. Except it was. She had no film in her camera (it was some dreadful compact the name of which is utterly forgotten). So I have no piccies of NYC. She only realised she was shooting blanks two weeks into our epic 3500 mile road trip (like the apostles we were all in one Accord) and that was in Florida. Well we got Memphis (other than Graceland - well worth a visit - it’s an utter shitteration), New Orleans, Miami, Boca Raton and back to Atlanta via Savannah* and of course Cape Canaveral, obviously. Oh, and Jacksonville.
Boca isn’t as bad as you think. It isn’t just the elephant’s graveyard of elderly jews (though it is). I stayed in the spare room of a consultant anaesthetist and not only was his business booming but he also had won the South Florida Consultant Anaesthetists Golf Championship. I know this because he’d stuck the trophy in the spare room I was in. We were due for a bris (them being Jews and all) but Ma Nature meant it happened a few days earlier and we had to do Christmas instead. Terribly flexible types these Jews. I went swimming on Crimble Day itself which quite frankly I wouldn’t have managed in Blighty unless I was mad.
So that’s my Kodachrome story. What’s yours?
*Yes, I have sat on Tom Hank’s bench.

First of all on Graceland.
The Beatles were invited there to meet Elvis when they were first touring the States.
When John Lennon came out, he turned to Paul and said
I didn’t believe it was fucking possible to spend a Million quid in Woolworths!
Shame about the Kodachrome, but time moves on.
I have a digital story.
I was on holiday in Turkey recently (yes and dont we fuckin know it! Ed) and had a funny five minutes while packing.
Our camera battery charger has a funny little two pin coupling for the plug into the socket. Well Turkey is a two pin country so I assumed I would be able to plug it right in, and didnt bring the adaptor.
Well the bloody pins are the wrong size arnt they? so I am fucked. No way to charge the batteries and the wife’s main hobby is taking photos, so I am looking at a divorce here!
The guys in the Photo
shop at our resort saved the day though, came up with one and only charged me a fiver!
Fewww that was close!
Whilst not as epic as Nick’s,
I spent an entire weekend snapping Dublin, Guinness brewery, Phoenix park , open top bus ride etc.
Only to discover camera was empty as I packed to go to the airport. Although in this case it was Fuji that was not loaded and not Kodak.
Being as this was a solo trip, I have never admited this to a living soul until now. Only stating that ‘I didn’t see anything worth photographing’ when people asked if I took any pictures.
Indeed, kinda sad about Kodachrome.
And not having film in? Ouch! Nikon DSLRs have a setting that lets them take pictures even if there is no memory card in. Needless to say, you should never, ever turn it on.
I’m pondering a Nikon DSLR or maybe a Cannon. Any thoughts. Mainly because my wife won’t allow me a crossbow. She thinks I’ll get up to mischief. She thinks correctly.
Only problem is… There is serious mission creep on the specs and this getting to the 800 quid plus ballpark.
I’d go for the Canon 50D + 17-85mm lens (£1109.00)

Cheers Pavlov. I knew I was looking at dropping over a grand. You do appreciate that is monies I don’t yet have. Oh well, best do some work then! I also need a new computer but I’m not asking anyone’s advice here.
Yep , I do appreciate that, but it’s better to wait and get the best you can, than compromise on something you’ll not be happy with.
Took me 2 1/2 years to save for my 20D , and am still saving to upgrade to the 50D, but other things keep coming up.
You can get a 500D (still an excellent camera) bundle for £699 but that’s with a 18-55mm lens, which you will soon get annoyed with that. But adding a 17-85mm instead takes it up to about £900.
In which case why not wait the bit of extra time, get the other £250 and get the 50D
Absolutely Pavlov. I concluded a while back that a 500 quid camera would be a waste of 500 quid. Thanks for your advice.
