Today, in the Trib, recent events in Haiti –
Gunfire rang out from the wealthy suburbs in the hills to the starving slums below as 9,000 U.N. peacekeepers were unable to halt a frenzy of looting and violence that has grown out of protests over rising food prices.
9000 UN peacekeepers? Demonstrating that level of success we have all come to expect from UN forces.
Still, food riots?
He delivered his first public comments Wednesday, nearly a week into the protests. With his job on the line, (President) Preval urged Congress to cut taxes on imported food and appealed to the rioters to go home.
Taxes on imported food? Seriously? The place cannot feed itself and it taxes imported food? How long ago did Britain scrap the corn laws?
Haiti is particularly affected by food prices, which have risen 40 percent on average globally since mid-2007. With 80 percent of its population struggling to survive on less than US$2 (€1.27) a day, the rising prices pose a real threat to its fragile democracy.
And why have prices risen so much?
I have reached the point where I am starting to hate the AGW hysterics. How can people be so sanctimonious while advocating policies so harmful to individual human beings and so divorced from reality?
Addendum: Â Â Â No, I guess I don’t hate them, that was a silly thing to say and brings me down to the level of some of the more foam flecked ranters on other sites out there, but I really have to start wondering about motives. The CO2 AGW hypothesis has been falsified a number of times now, and the hysterics still insist on promoting it, to the detriment of their fellow human beings. What will it take to induce them to acknowledge reality?
Oh come on now! The UN ensured that the genocide of Kosovans was carried out in an orderly fashion. They have also done such good jobs in Rwanda and Darfur.
